How this will affect your organization?

If you use classic sites and require usage data, you can download historical data for all these popularity reports until August 7, 2020. Users will no longer be able to download usage data for Classic sites after this change is implemented.

What you need to do to prepare for this update?

After this change is implemented, you can get site usage data from the modern Site Usage page. To see the page, select Site settings > Popularity trends > Usage. You can access usage data for the last 90 days. The data that’s represented in the modern Site Usage report includes data from both classic and modern sites. Also, the modern Site Usage page will start supporting the download of data in Excel before the classic reports are removed.

  • We can download and save historical data from these reports before August 7, 2020.
  • We should not be in a panic – before the classic popularity trends get expired, Microsoft will enable this feature (popularity trends) in the modern sites.

By the way, what is Classic SharePoint?

SharePoint Classic, also known as SharePoint on-premises or SharePoint Server, refers to the earlier version of SharePoint before the introduction of SharePoint Online and the Modern SharePoint experience. SharePoint Classic was widely popular and widely adopted by organizations around the world for its robust document management capabilities, collaboration features, and customizable workflows.

At its peak, SharePoint Classic had a significant user base, with many organizations relying on it as their primary platform for content management, team collaboration, and intranet solutions. It offered a comprehensive set of features, including document libraries, lists, site templates, search capabilities, and integration with other Microsoft products like Office applications. SharePoint Classic was highly customizable, allowing organizations to tailor the platform to their specific needs and create unique solutions.

However, with the evolution of cloud-based technologies and the introduction of SharePoint Online, Microsoft’s focus shifted towards the Modern SharePoint experience. SharePoint Online provides a more modern and user-friendly interface, improved collaboration tools, responsive design, and seamless integration with other Microsoft 365 services.

As a result, the popularity of SharePoint Classic has waned over time. Many organizations have migrated or are considering migrating to SharePoint Online to take advantage of the latest features, scalability, security, and the ease of maintenance offered by the cloud-based platform. Microsoft has also shifted its development efforts towards enhancing SharePoint Online, adding new features and capabilities to further encourage organizations to adopt the modern experience.

While SharePoint Classic still remains in use by some organizations due to specific requirements or limitations, its popularity has significantly decreased as SharePoint Online and the Modern SharePoint experience have gained momentum. Microsoft encourages users to embrace the modern experience and actively promotes the migration from SharePoint Classic to SharePoint Online to leverage the latest advancements in collaboration and productivity.
