From my previous two articles 1. Getting started with Microsoft Teams in Office 365 and 2. How to create Teams in Microsoft Teams – Office 365 we have learned about what is Microsoft Teams and how to install and configure Microsoft Teams from Microsoft 365 admin center and how to create teams in Microsoft Teams.

In this article, we will learn about how to add a channel in Microsoft Teams. Before starting that little lets brief about Microsoft Teams Channel.

What is teams in Microsoft Teams?

Microsoft Teams are a collection of people where they work in various projects in the organization – for each project team, we can create a separate team using that they can communicate with each other and work more collaborative way and they can share content, tools, etc among each other within the organization.

 • Teams can be created as private – this is to only invite users.
 • Teams can also be created as public – this is open for anyone within the organization and can join.

Note:

 • In public teams, we can have a maximum of 5000 members.

What is the channel in Microsoft Teams?

Channels are dedicated sections within a team to maintain the conversations more organized – the conversations could be anything, whatever is related to the particular team. The channel is built around a topic – and the topic could be “Team Events”, projects related discussion or just for fun, etc. This is the place where team hold meetings – have a conversation with each other and work on the Shared files.

A channel is a core place where the work actually gets done. The channel can be extended with apps that include connectors, tabs, and bots.

There are two types of channel:

 • Standard – Accessible to everyone on the team
 • Private – Accessible only to a specific group of people within the team

Now we know what is Microsoft Teams and channel. So let’s dive into the channel – how to create it – then we will realize the real value of channel in the Teams.

Step by step process to add a channel in the Microsoft Teams:

Let’s see what happens in SharePoint online when we create a channel in Microsoft Teams:

Login to the SharePoint Migration Team site “https://globalsharepoint2019.sharepoint.com/sites/SharePointMigrationTeam” which was created thru the Microsoft Teams.

Here, we can see that the channel “SharePoint Migration Team – Channel” what we have created in Microsoft Teams – is created as a folder inside the default “Documents” library. So we can say that channel in Microsoft Teams is nothing but a folder in SharePoint “Documents” library under the particular team site.

Note:

The “General” folder that we can see here in the “Documents” library is – a folder which was created automatically when we have created the “SharePoint Migration Team” in Microsoft Teams.
