As per the “New Feature: Inline Chat message translation for iOS – [iOS] Teams Mobile On-Demand Chat Translation” June Microsoft 365 Roadmap update – the office 365 administrator can turn on inline message translation in Microsoft Teams from the Microsoft 365 admin center. So, in this article, we will learn how to turn on inline message translation in Microsoft Teams from the Microsoft 365 admin center as well as using the PowerShell command.

What is messaging policies in Microsoft Teams?

As per Microsoft, the definition of messaging policies in Microsoft Teams is as Messaging policies are used to control what chat and channel messaging features are available to users in Teams.

We can use the tenant default policy (Global (Org-wide default)) or create one or more custom messaging policies for people in your organization.

What is inline message translation in Microsoft Teams?

As per Microsoft, the definition of inline message translation in Microsoft Teams is as “Inline chat message translation lets users translate Teams mobile chat messages into the language they choose. This feature is rolling out first for iOS; we will send a separate message when we have the schedule for Android.”

When will the inline message translation in Microsoft Teams be rolled on?

  • The updated iOS app will be released to the store in late June 2020.
  • We anticipate that the rollout will be complete by mid-July 2020.

How to turn on inline message translation in Microsoft Teams?

We can use the messaging policy to turn on the inline message translation.

Two ways inline message translation in Microsoft Teams feature (messaging policy) can be turned on:

  • Turn on inline message translation using the PowerShell command 
  • Turn on inline message translation using the Microsoft Teams admin center

Turn on inline message translation using the PowerShell command

Enable this setting using the Set-CsTeamsMessagingPolicy cmdlet.


Set-CsTeamsMessagingPolicy -AllowUserTranslation

The above command determines whether a user is allowed to translate messages to their client languages. Set this to TRUE to allow. Set this to FALSE to prohibit.

Turn on inline message translation using the Microsoft Teams admin center

In order to turn on inline message translation using the Microsoft Teams admin center, we need to follow the below steps:

Note:

  • Either we can create a new policy or edit an existing policy, and set the Allow users to translate messages option to On.

In this demo, I have selected my default existing policy “Global (Org-wide default) for the proof of concept.

Click on the Edit button.

Then in the list of messaging policies section, we can see the “Allow users to translate messages” option to on or off once this feature is rolled out across all tenants. We anticipate that the rollout will be completed by mid-July 2020.

Note:

  • As of today (21th June 2020) “Allow users to translate messages” option is not available.

Note:

  • The policy takes a few minutes to apply. Users might need to sign out and sign back into Teams – it applies in both PowerShell or Microsoft Teams Admincter UI approaches.

How to verify or use the inline message translation feature for your organization

Once the Allow users to translate messages” is enabled in Microsoft Teams admin center, we can test this feature now how this should function. 

When using the Teams mobile iOS app, users who receive a chat message in another language can choose to translate that chat message into the language they have set in Settings > General > Translation. Sample as below.

To translate a chat message, press-and-hold the message to see the translation option.
