Manage apps in Microsoft Teams

When you are managing apps for your organization, you are controlling what apps are available to users in your organization’s app store. You can then use app permission and app setup policies to configure what apps will be available for specific users.

How to view apps in your tenant app catalog in Microsoft Teams?

Log in to the Microsoft Teams admin center using this URL – https://admin.teams.microsoft.com/policies/manage-apps

In the left navigation of the Microsoft Teams admin center, go to Teams Apps > Manage apps. You must be a global admin or Teams Service admin to access the page.

Note:

  • The Manage apps page isn’t available yet in Microsoft 365 Government Community Cloud (GCC) deployments of Teams.

From the manage apps page, we can configure the below:

  • Upload a new custom app
  • Allow app to be available for users in the Teams App store
  • Block app to be available for users in the Teams App store
  • Search an app from Teams App store
  • Org-wide app settings

Various app status in Microsoft Teams app store

The status of the app at the org level, which can be one of the following:

  • Allowed: The app is available for all users in your organization.
  • Blocked: The app is blocked and not available for any users in your organization.
  • Blocked org-wide: The app is blocked in org-wide app settings.

It’s important to know that this column represents the allowed and blocked status of apps that were formerly on the Org-wide settings pane. You now view, block, and allow apps at the org-wide on the Manage apps page.

 

How to upload your custom app in Microsoft Teams

Click on the “+ Upload” button from the manage apps page.

Then click on the “select a file” button to upload your custom app.

Note:

  • Before you upload the app, make sure it has been tested completely. Verify that it is working properly and follow your organization’s security and compliance requirements.

How to allow the app to be available for users in the Teams App store?

  1. Select the list of apps to be available for users in the Teams App store
  2. Click on the “Allow” button from the manage apps page.
  3. Then click on the “Allow” button to allow the app to be available for users in the Teams App store

Notes:

  • You are allowing this app to be available for users in the Teams App store. However, it won’t be available to them if they have a blocking app permission policy.

How to block the app to be available for users in the Teams App store?

  1. Select the list of apps to be blocked for users in the Teams App store
  2. Click on the “Block” button from the manage apps page.
  3. Then click on the “Block” button to block the app to be available for users in the Teams App store

Notes:

  • You are blocking this app! If you block it, it won’t be available for users in the Teams App store. It will still be blocked even if their permission policy allows the app.
  • The apps you have blocked may still have access to the data in the team it has been installed in. To disable this apps’ data access, have your Global Admin, Application Admin, or Cloud Application Admin, go to Azure Active Directory admin center, and set ‘Enabled for users to sign in?’ to false.

Notes:

  • The apps you have blocked may still have access to the data in the team it has been installed in. To disable this apps’ data access, have your Global Admin, Application Admin, or Cloud Application Admin, go to Azure Active Directory admin center, and set ‘Enabled for users to sign in?’ to false.

You can control which third-party apps can be installed for your organization

  • Allow third-party apps – toggle on/off (the default setting is on).
  • Allow any new third-party apps published to the store by default – toggle on/off (the default setting is on).

Custom apps configuration in Teams

If your organization requires apps other than those available in the Teams Apps store, custom apps can be developed as app packages and uploaded.

  • Allow interaction with custom apps – toggle on/off (the default setting is on).
