In this “Rename Power Platform Environment” article, we will learn about how to quickly rename the default environment or the Power Platform environment from the Power Platform Admin Centre tool. For this, you need the Power Platform Administrator role or Global Administrator and a dedicated administrator role for the environment that you want to rename. Before getting into the article, let’s understand what the default environment is in Power Platform.

What is the default Environment on the Power Platform?

The default environment gets created automatically when you create your tenant; the name will be created in this format: “TenantName (default),” for example, MSFT (default). The name is not user-friendly or doesn’t give any intent to have it; we should rename it to something like “Personal Productivity.”.

Each user in your organization has access to the default environment; whenever a new user signs up to Power Apps or Power Automate, they are automatically added to the Maker role of the default environment. One of the uses of the default environment to a greater extent is that when you create any Power Automate flows or apps from the SharePoint Online site context, they automatically get deployed to the default environment of your tenant. So it is known as a public environment for your tenant.

So this environment is very risky for your tenant. You must secure your default environment by implementing the DLP (Data loss prevention (DLP) policies) policy – in this article, I have shown how to secure your default environment using the DLP policy.

In the above demo, we have seen how to rename the default environment in Power Platform, but why should we rename it? What are the business needs for this? Let’s understand it.

Why rename the “Default Environment”?

There are many technical reasons; below are a few reasons:

Personalization and Branding:

Although the term “Default Environment” may seem commonplace, the area you have on the Power Platform is everything but typical. You’re branding, not just personalizing, when you give it a name that fits with the essence of your company. You may add a personal touch to your Power Platform experience by renaming the default environment to something special, like your company name, project code, or visionary theme.

Clarity and Organization:

Managing many environments becomes more challenging as you use more Power Platform. Renaming the “Default Environment” makes sense in the crowded world of online resources. It is immediately clear which environment is the default, simplifying your organisation and facilitating users’ identification of the main area where they should be spending their time.

Enhanced Collaboration:

A common collaboration area on the Power Platform is where users work together to develop and improve applications. Personalised environment names let collaborators recognise and interact with the shared space more easily, fostering a sense of community and ownership. This small act of personalisation can foster a more cohesive and cooperative workplace.
