SharePoint Online is an integral part of Office 365, providing robust collaboration and document management capabilities for organizations. However, users sometimes encounter an error message stating, “Everything is fine, but we had a small problem getting your license.” This issue can be frustrating and disruptive, particularly when it appears intermittently or affects multiple users. This article will explore the causes of this error and provide troubleshooting steps to resolve it.

Understanding the Error

The “Everything is fine, but we had a small problem getting your license” error typically indicates an issue with the user’s Office 365 license, preventing proper access to SharePoint Online services. The error can stem from several underlying issues, including:

  • License assignment problems
  • Synchronization delays or issues
  • User account issues
  • Temporary service disruptions

Common Causes and Solutions

  1. License Assignment Problems

One of the most common causes of this error is improper or missing license assignment. Each user must have the appropriate Office 365 license that includes SharePoint Online.

    Solution:

    • Check the user’s license assignment in the Office 365 Admin Center.
    • Ensure the user has a valid license that includes SharePoint Online.
    • Reassign the license if necessary and wait for a few minutes for changes to propagate.
  2. Synchronization Delays or Issues

Sometimes, there can be a delay or issue in synchronizing user licenses between Azure Active Directory (AAD) and SharePoint Online.

    Solution:

    • Wait for a few minutes to allow synchronization to complete.
    • Manually force synchronization if delays persist by running the following PowerShell cmdlet in Azure AD:
      powershell
      Start-ADSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Delta
  3. User Account Issues

User account issues, such as a corrupted profile or misconfigured settings, can also lead to licensing problems.

    Solution:

    • Verify the user’s account settings in the Office 365 Admin Center.
    • Check for any anomalies or misconfigurations and correct them.
    • Consider recreating the user profile if the issue persists.
  4. Temporary Service Disruptions

Sometimes, the error may be due to temporary service disruptions or maintenance activities on the Office 365 platform.

    Solution:

    • Check the Office 365 Service Health Dashboard for any ongoing issues or maintenance activities.
    • If a service disruption is reported, wait for Microsoft to resolve the issue.

Detailed Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Verify License Assignment
    • Log in to the Office 365 Admin Center.
    • Navigate to Users > Active users.
    • Select the affected user and click on Licenses and Apps.
    • Ensure the correct license is assigned to the user.
  2. Force License Synchronization
    • Open Azure AD Connect on your server.
    • Run a Delta Sync to expedite the synchronization process:
      powershell
      Start-ADSyncSyncCycle -PolicyType Delta
  3. Check User Account Configuration
    • Log in to the Office 365 Admin Center.
    • Navigate to Users > Active users.
    • Select the affected user and review their account settings.
    • Check for any anomalies or misconfigurations and correct them.
  4. Monitor Service Health
    • Log in to the Office 365 Admin Center.
    • Navigate to Health > Service Health.
    • Check for any reported issues or maintenance activities affecting SharePoint Online.

Preventive Measures

To minimize the occurrence of this error in the future, consider the following preventive measures:

  • Regularly review and update user licenses in the Office 365 Admin Centre.
  • Monitor synchronization status and ensure timely synchronization of user accounts and licenses.

Root Cause of this issue – Everything is fine, but we had a small problem

We get this error if we try to add an app from the SharePoint app store using the system account in the case of SharePoint On-premise or the Global Administrator account in the case of  SharePoint Online.

Fix/Resolution – Everything is fine, but we had a small problem

In the case of SharePoint On-Premise – Try to add the app using the non-system account – assign that new account to the site collection administrators for the site where you want to add the app, then you will be able to add the app to the site without any issues.

In the case of SharePoint Online  – Try to add the app using the non-global administrator role – assign that new account to the site collection administrators for the site where you want to add the app, then you will be able to add the app to the site without any issues.

Having said that – the said message is not user-friendly – Microsoft should have displayed this message something like “Use the non-system account (the user should be site collection administrator) if you are adding this app to the SharePoint On-Premise site or use the non-global administrator account (the user should be site collection administrator) if you are adding this app in the SharePoint Online site.”
